Situation in Italy and driving on road. Original link here.
Why Italy is so far behind?
” In my opinion it is not yet clear what impact that autonomous vehicles might have and …… we have not seen any great interest. But from the other parts, not only in the United States but also, for example in England – where next year will be able to move with automated vehicles on public roads. ”
” In France, they are working hard and there is fermentation in the Netherlands: I went to the Netherlands more than one year ago because I was called by the Ministry of Transport, who was interested in understanding the impact of these new technologies, in order to know how to modify the legislation. ”
Why driving and testing on road is a critical step in the development of autonomous vehicles?
“Clearly before you do the test of vehicles you have to make sure that it behaves well. However the real test should be immersed in real traffic, where the vehicle has to figure out how to pass the others, maneuver what they do, and what are the critical issues. It can be only done in a real environment; there are simulations with fake city, but in the real validation in the real environment there are many un-expectations to manage. ”
Not being able to do the test is limiting, but fortunately “VisLab is a global company that works with companies all over the world, so the local obstacles are a brake on the development work, and the successful research of VisLab is not said that brings direct benefits to Italy, unless there was an Italian car manufacturer to work with VisLab. In that case the results of the VisLab would be used directly on the ground “.
However Broggi explains to those companies who are interested: “In Italy we are working with Magneti Marelli, an Italian company that is interested in the topic of automatic vehicle and initiated a research center with VisLab. Certainly we would have a big advantage if we had the opportunity to test vehicles on public roads, but since we’re doing global test in the United States, South Korea and other countries. So the thing is that doing test abroad will make our vehicles more suitable to drive on foreign roads. ”
We are currently working with a number of car manufacturers and supplier – such as Magneti Marelli in fact – and in the past we have collaborated with Volkswagen and Volvo, to make the names spread publicly.
