Right from this month, all self-driving cars must obtain the permission from California Government, in order to do tests in the real traffic scenes. 29 permissions in total were released last week, Google got 25 for its modified Lexus SUV. Meanwhile, Audi and Daimler also got 2 for each.
This permission roots from one bill issued in 2012 in California. Any organization can apply for the on-road test permission for self-driving vehicle: the fee for the first prototype is 150 USD, and 50 USD for one more each. Besides, these organization have to conduct tests, in order to buy the insurance up to 5 million USD.
California aims at giving self-driving car legal rights, and supervising this new technology, thus ensuring the leading position of California in high-tech field.
